Description: Posidonius (c. 135 B.C.E. – c. 51 B.C.E.) was a Greek polymath who developed hypotheses about geography and accurately estimated the circumference of the Earth using methods similar to those used by Eratosthenes a century before. This map was produced in 1628 by cartographers Petrus Bertius and Melchior Tavernier, based on the ideas of Posidonius but incorporating information that would not have been available in the first century B.C.E.
